We asked the founder, Harold Bekkering, professor of social cognitive neuroscience, 6 questions.

1. What is your value proposition?

De Lerende Mens uses insights from science to develop high-quality technical products that stimulate the learning process, such as learning to read.

De Lerende Mens complies with the following SDG goals:

  • SDG 1: No poverty
  • SDG 2: Zero hunger
  • SDG 3: Good health and well-being
  • SDG 4: Quality education
  • SDG 5: Gender equality

2. What’s your mission?

Our goal is to teach all children in the Netherlands to read better and learn to learn better.

3. How did Mercator Launch help you?

Via Mercator Launch we received a starter voucher of € 2,500. This helped us to finance our standardization research required to obtain the mandatory COTAN approval. Without this approval, we cannot market our product.

4. What are the future plans for De Lerende Mens?

We want to help young people on a large scale with basic skills such as learning to read. Our dream is to become the market leader within schools and healthcare in this field. We also want to develop other products that help young people to improve their learning process

5. What do you need to make this happen?

We are now active at 20 schools and several healthcare providers. We still have to develop our products into good final versions. We primarily need help in marketing. So, are you a marketeer and do you want to help us grow? Let us know and send us a message!

6. If you can give one piece of advice to future entrepreneurs what would that be?

Start a test version of your product with your first customer as soon as possible and learn how to improve your product along the way.
